About Tipping in Fiji

Overview

Tipping in Fiji exists in a culturally interesting tension — the traditional Fijian value of "kerekere" (communal sharing and reciprocity) means money isn't exchanged in the same transactional way as in Western cultures, yet resort workers appreciate tips and the tourism industry has developed clear expectations for them.

When to Tip

Tip at resort restaurants (10%), with boat crew and dive operators, resort housekeeping, and with tour guides for village visits, waterfall hikes, and island excursions. At local village homestays on outer islands, a small cash gift or purchase from the village is more culturally appropriate than a structured tip.

How to Tip

Fijian dollars in small denominations are the preferred tipping currency. For resort meals, 10% is appropriate. For dive masters and boat crew after a day trip, FJ$10–20 per person is the going rate. Hand tips directly to the person rather than leaving them in a box.

Cultural Context

Fiji's "kerekere" principle means that within villages, resources are shared freely and obligations flow in all directions — a concept that can make direct cash tipping feel slightly at odds with the culture at a local level. At international resorts, staff are accustomed to and grateful for tips. The most meaningful thing a visitor can do is combine tipping with genuine personal warmth — in Fijian culture, the quality of the human interaction matters as much as the financial gesture.
