About Tipping in Sri Lanka

Overview

Tipping is appreciated in Sri Lanka and increasingly expected in tourist-facing contexts as the country rebuilds its tourism industry. Ten percent at restaurants is the norm in Colombo, Galle, and resort areas; elsewhere, a smaller gesture is appropriate and well received.

When to Tip

Tip at sit-down restaurants (10%), with tuk-tuk and taxi drivers (rounding up), hotel porters and housekeeping, spa therapists, and tour guides — particularly for cultural circuit tours (Sigiriya, Kandy, Polonnaruwa), train journey guides, and whale watching operators.

How to Tip

Sri Lankan rupees in small denominations are practical for everyday tipping. USD is accepted in tourist areas but local currency is preferred outside the major tourist circuit. For tuk-tuk rides, negotiate the fare first and add a small amount at the end. Restaurant tips are best left in cash directly on the table.

Cultural Context

Sri Lanka's tourism industry went through severe disruption during the 2019 Easter bombings, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the country's 2022 economic crisis, which hit hospitality workers especially hard. The service sector workforce — particularly in cultural and nature tourism — is made up of knowledgeable, often multilingual guides who invested in their skills through difficult years. Tipping in Sri Lanka is a direct contribution to that recovery.
